Can Guppy Live With Platy?
Sometimes, Guppies and Platies coexist in 10+ gallons if the water is kept on the harder side and both species are similar in size, but male guppies can be relentless breeders and platies may get overwhelmed by the population pressure.
Why
- Guppies and Platies are both livebearers with overlapping care requirements (72-80°F, pH 7.0-7.8) and both tolerate harder water without issue.
- Guppy males are small, active, and continuously pursue females for mating, which can create chronic stress for slower platy females.
- Platy females are larger than guppy females and can hold their own, but repeated mating attempts may cause them to hide and reduce feeding activity.
- Both species are peaceful toward fish of similar size, so direct aggression is not the concern. The real issue is breeding pressure from an active guppy population.
- Guppies reach about 1.5 inches while platies reach about 2 inches, so the size difference is modest and does not create a predation risk in either direction.
What could go wrong
A tank with both guppies and platies can quickly become overstocked with fry, and the bioload from successive broods of both livebearers often exceeds what a small tank can handle.

AquaClear 20 Power Filter
Rated for up to 10 gallons with enough biological media to handle the waste from both species.
Eheim Jager 100W Thermostat Heater
Holds a steady temperature inside the 72-80°F window both species need.
API Freshwater Master Test Kit
Keep ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in check. Two-species tanks have more bioload and less margin for error than single-species setups.
Better pairings to consider
In tanks where livebearer breeding is unwanted, keep all-male groups of one species or replace guppies with Endlers livebearers which are smaller and less relentless breeders; in tanks where breeding is acceptable, expect and plan for both species producing fry regularly.
