Can Angelfish Live With Platy?
Sometimes, angelfish at 6 inches may pick off platy fry, but adult platies are generally safe with angels in a planted tank.
Why
- Angelfish grow to 6 inches tall and are cichlids with predatory instincts that sharpen as they mature.
- Platy fry at less than 0.5 inches fit easily in an adult angel's mouth and are vulnerable.
- Adult platies at 2-3 inches are too big for angelfish to eat comfortably.
- Angelfish tolerate 76-82F and platies tolerate 70-80F, so 76-80F works for both.
- Heavy plant cover gives platy fry hiding spots and reduces the chance angelfish will find them.
What could go wrong
Angelfish will eat platy fry, so if you are breeding platies the combination does not work. Adult platies are generally safe unless the angel is unusually large.

AquaClear 70 Power Filter
Oversized filtration is what lets you stock two species together without water quality crashing. Rated for a tank slightly larger than the 30 gallon minimum.
Eheim Jager 200W Thermostat Heater
Holds a steady temperature inside the 76-80°F window both species need.
API Freshwater Master Test Kit
Keep ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in check. Two-species tanks have more bioload and less margin for error than single-species setups.
Better pairings to consider
The outcome improves if the tank is heavily planted and you are not breeding platies, or if you separate fry in a breeding tank.
